Protecting investors in the event of an investment firm authorised by the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission being unable to repay investments.
The Gibraltar Investor Compensation Scheme ("GICS") protects eligible investors and pays compensation where an investment firm authorised by the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission ("GFSC") is unable to return client money or assets held in connection with investment services. The Scheme does not regulate these firms; this is carried out by the GFSC.
Investor Compensation Schemes are established under EU Directive 97/9/EC, which was transposed into Gibraltar legislation through the Investor Compensation Scheme Act. The Scheme provides protection where an investment firm is unable to repay money belonging to investors or return financial instruments held on their behalf due to the firm's financial circumstances.
